FaceDefender is a self-help app which is designed to make your smart watch trigger a vibrating alarm, whenever you move your hand close to your face or mouth. This is a useful consciousness to learn as most people tend to touch their face sub-consciously many times a day. Using the app, the alerts can help in a number of instances such as warning the user against potentially transferring virus or bacteria to their facial area or to help with diet control by increasing user awareness of sub-conscious “snacking”.

The app is a simple toggle on/off switch on the watch:
If the wearer moves their hand towards their face the watch itself will produce a vibration alert. It is recommended that the user wears the watch on the dominant hand and that the watch settings are set up accordingly.

Use the Fitbit companion app on your phone to open the settings for FaceDefender and select the hand you wear your watch on. In the companion you can perfom the following tasks:
  1. Enable or disable face defender. This is the same as pressing the On or Off buttons on the watch app.
  2. Select which wrist you are wearing the watch on. FaceDefender needs to know this in order for alerts to work correctly.
  3. Select the haptic alert you prefer. You have 3 options to choose from plus silent (None). (See notes below about this).
  4. Enable or disable the alert hit counter.
  5. Reset the hit counter.

The alert counter is is displayed on your watch only if it is enabled. This counter simply gives a running total of the number of times the alert has been triggered. If you set the alert haptic to None you should enable the alert counter. Use of the alert counter consumes slightly more watch and phone battery power.

Additional Notes
FaceDefender only works whileyou are wearing the watch. If you take the watch off it goes into low power mode automatically. You should turn off FaceDefender when you go to bed. If you do not then FaceDefender will do this automatically for you after about 30 minutes of inactivity. If you are an extremely restless sleeper it might not do this and will waste battery power. FaceDefender is designed to use as little power as possible and in order to do this does not monitor the accelerometer at a very fast rate as to do so would consume considerably more power. Very rapid hand movement maay not be detected as a result of this.
